The Differences Between French Press and Pour-Over Coffee

The Differences Between French Press and Pour-Over Coffee

There is more than one way to make a cup of coffee. Two methods you may have heard is French press and pour-over. You may be wondering which one is better. Both methods are unique in their own ways. Here are some differences between French press coffee and pour-over coffee.

Equipment

One difference is the equipment needed to brew coffee. French presses usually have the same design. Each coffee maker has:

  • A cylinder-shaped carafe

  • A lid

  • A plunger top

Pour-over coffee makers will often come in different styles, with some being flat-sided like a Chemex. However, most coffee makers have:

  • A gooseneck kettle

  • A filter

  • A dripper

Flavor

One of the most important differences for coffee lovers is how the drink will taste. French press coffee will become rich and creamy. However, the lack of a paper filter also makes the flavors seem less striking. Pour over coffees are silkier, and the brewing process enhances the flavor. For example, sweet coffees taste sweeter. This is because the filter keeps out sediment.

Ground Size

You will need to use coarse ground coffee when using a French press. Costa Rica coffee and Honduran coffee would go well with a French press. When you are making pour-over coffee, it is best that you use a medium grind. Indian Monsoon Malabar coffee and Colombian coffee are excellent for a pour-over brew.

The Brewing Process

You may find the process of brewing French press coffee rather easy. The steps to use a French press are quite simple:

  • Add the ground coffee to the beaker

  • Add hot water

  • Wait a few minutes

  • Use the plunger to push down slowly

To brew pour-over coffee, you will need to:

  • Wet the grounds evenly

  • Wait for the coffee to bloom

  • Pour the rest of the water in a circular pattern

  • Remove the filter and swirl the coffee
